A clearer approach to cybersecurity for companies at Schiphol Airport

Using the digital Game of Threats, Schiphol-based companies have gained a better understanding of the joint approach to cybersecurity.

What was the problem?

Schiphol wants to greatly increase the level of cybersecurity at all the companies and suppliers based at the airport and has therefore organised a joint venture with Cyssec. Optimum security for the digital ecosystem will boost the attractiveness of Schiphol as a location for enterprises to establish themselves and will make the airport more competitive. But how should companies, which are involved in different chains, take a structured approach to digital security?

So what was the solution?

As the starting point for a solution, PwC initiated discussion between companies using the digital Game of Threats. Supervised by experienced cybersecurity experts and working under high pressure, participants alternately played the role of attacker or defender in the event of a cyberthreat. What strategic choices do you need to make when you have only 90 seconds to decide? How do you respond to ransomware, an attempt to steal data, or a DDoS attack that crashes your systems?

What was the result?

The game made it clear to all involved that it's essential to approach cybersecurity strategically – at the highest level within the organisation and in conjunction with the chain. PwC facilitated the exchange of information during the evaluation process. For example, one player of the game chose entirely to invest in system security rather than employee training, “because training just doesn’t work”. The response of another player was to say “At my company, training is really effective”. The participants quickly decided to work together in the group to investigate the matter further. The game triggered discussion about the necessary joint approach. The active gaming approach meant that participants got to know one another in a way that wouldn’t have been possible around a conference table. The result was a fully involved team with the energy to tackle the issue together.
