Insights and perspectives on the future of critical infrastructure in the Netherlands
Critical infrastructure refers to the physical and digital backbone of the Netherlands. Without properly functioning connections, whether a bridge, a lock, or a digital hub, daily life comes to a standstill. If this infrastructure fails, the impact is immediately felt, including economic losses, societal disruption, and risks to public safety. Moreover, the effects are not limited locally; disruptions ripple through supply chains and can bring entire sectors to a halt.
The Netherlands is therefore facing an unprecedented infrastructure challenge. Roads, bridges, locks, and dikes require urgent maintenance. The same applies to the electricity grid, which needs to be reinforced. Hundreds of thousands of new homes need to be built. The energy transition and the continued digitalization of the Netherlands require new facilities and data centers. All of these, are challenges that cannot be postponed. At the same time, the playing field is becoming increasingly constrained. Budgets are under pressure, space and environmental regulations are limited, and the labor market is structurally overstretched. This means that the Netherlands cannot do everything at once. Choices are inevitable.
At PwC, we see it as our responsibility to contribute to this challenge. We do so by making complex issues transparent through data and analysis, and by working together with public and private stakeholders to overcome bottlenecks in both policy and execution. The urgency is high, but not insurmountable. With our insights, we help decision-makers make better, explainable, and actionable decisions, for a safe, prosperous, and sustainable Netherlands.
We are pleased to share our insights and vision on critical infrastructure and support both the decision-making process and its implementation.
