Energy company Eneco aims to be climate-neutral by 2035 - not only in its own activities but also in the energy it supplies to customers. For this One Planet strategy, Eneco needs insights that come from efficient processes and accurate data. To achieve this, Eneco enlisted the help of PwC to further professionalise the financial and procurement function. This transformation involved integrating SAP S/4HANA and Central Finance, changing organisational processes, and a change management process for the people working with the solution.

PwC brought together people with different perspectives, with a mix of expertise in finance, procurement, risk, SAP, and change management. "The value of this transformation lies on the business side," says Jan-Willem Sanders, Advisory partner at PwC. "This transformation was the right moment to implement changes in the organisation." Using the SAP cloud solution and Central Finance as an example, finance and procurement processes were simplified and data was standardised.
PwC developed a uniform steering and reporting model for Eneco, that resulted in a spread workload and frontloaded decision-making. PwC's alliance with SAP guaranteed the right knowledge and experience for the complex integration process. The SAP implementation by PwC covered all phases: designing the IT architecture and technical integration, data migration, testing and addressing defects, establishing authorizations and roles, training the Eneco team and implementing tools for financial planning, analysis, and management reporting.
Eneco and PwC agreed that this business transformation was strongly driven by people. Therefore, the process paid close attention to the impact of change on employees. The transformation demanded a lot from them, as they had to continue their daily work alongside their project role. With a focus on people, Eneco and PwC worked towards striking the right balance to responsibly implement the change.
Jeanine Tijhaar, CFO of Eneco, is "very proud" of the result, which lays a strong foundation for the One Planet strategy. "All processes have been standardised and management data has been harmonized, allowing us to make good management analyses. This provides us with a foundation from which we can make further improvements."
