Transactions that move the retail, consumer and leisure industries

PwC Consumer Markets M&A Deals newsletter September 2026

Transactions that move the retail, consumer and leisure industries
  • 21 Oct 2026

Now that the final quarter of 2026 has begun, this is a good time to reflect on the year so far. Following a promising end to 2025 and start to 2026, deal activity in the consumer market has become increasingly concentrated among a small group of companies.

Capital is flowing primarily towards resilient businesses with strong positions in their product categories, sufficient scale and credible value creation plans. We see businesses without a clear strategic rationale or with a weaker market position facing longer transaction processes and greater scrutiny from buyers.

As the market continues to evolve, investment capital is being deployed increasingly selectively. Focus, conviction and thorough preparation are therefore crucial to standing out.

A total of 66 transactions took place in August, remaining stable compared with last year. Some notable transactions include:

  • the acquisition of ATG Entertainment Ltd by AE EventsCo Holdings LLC,
  • the acquisition of Saputo Inc’s UK dairy division by Groupe Lactalis SA,
  • the acquisition of Gong Cha Global Ltd by Bain Capital LP.

The most active sector in August, measured by the number of transactions, was foodservice and restaurants, with eight transactions. Examples include:

  • the acquisition of Gong Cha Global Ltd by Bain Capital LP,
  • the acquisition of a 65 per cent stake in Plenty Food Company by Nofoth Food Products Co, and
  • the acquisition of BK-Tonsberg AS by King Food AS.

Various potential acquisitions and exits are also being explored. Some examples include:

  • Belgian brewer Brouwerij Huyghe, together with a Belgian property partner, is reviewing the sale documentation for fellow brewer Brouwerij Haacht,
  • the Netherlands-based Royal Taste Company expects to make one acquisition a year to complement its organic growth,
  • Sipef, a Belgium-based group with palm oil and banana plantations, sees scope for acquisitions.
