Why did you choose the Edge Deals traineeship at PwC?

Alongside my studies, I was already working in Mergers & Acquisitions at a smaller company, which sparked my interest in the field. I started looking into where I wanted to work after my studies, and that led me to PwC. PwC immediately stood out because of the coaching and training programs they offer and the interesting cases for major clients. Additionally, the culture and the people really appealed to me.

How was it to start working at PwC?

Every new job takes some getting used to, but I was well received and guided in the first few weeks. Additionally, I got to join the ski trip right away, which really helped me get to know everyone. I quickly got assigned to a project and soon felt like part of the team. Beyond my project team, I have a buddy who helps me with daily questions and a Career Coach and Performance Coach who assist with my strategic and personal goals.

Which track within Edge did you choose and why?

During my studies and internships, I quickly realized that I find numbers incredibly interesting and enjoy linking them to complex cases. When I attended the Business Course, I discovered that I found Financial Due Diligence (FDD) the most interesting and best suited to me. After a pleasant conversation with PwC, we concluded that I wanted to specialize and they found me a good fit for the FDD team. Thus, we agreed on the expert track of FDD.

What does the program look like for you?

The expert program offers the same options as the rotation track, but I focus on one competency. You have the same activities as your trainee group, such as the international event in Madrid, and the same introductions. The difference with the expert track is that you immediately specialize in the field that you find interesting, while the rotation track gives you the chance to get to know various aspects.

What exactly do you do?

In FDD, we analyze the current position of a company and identify any irregularities. The report we prepare serves as a basis for discussions about the possible sale of the company. By reading the report, stakeholders can assess various factors such as potential risks, obligations, and the sustainability of profits. My role as an Associate is to support the team where necessary. This includes creating charts and tables, but also making slides for the final report.

The dynamic nature of deals and the diverse teams I work with make my job both varied and interesting. Due to the relatively short duration of projects, I gain insight into numerous different companies, which is really fascinating.

How does your workday look like?

My workday is often filled with collaborating with my project team. In the morning, we discuss the deliverables and goals of the day and create a game plan to achieve these goals.

What do you expect to learn during this traineeship?

Firstly, I expect to gain deeper insight into the M&A market. How does it work and what factors are important? I want to link this to broadening my financial knowledge. Additionally, PwC provides you with the tools and knowledge to lay a solid foundation for your career and advance to Senior Associate and beyond.

What do you enjoy about your work?

The fun part about the job is that every few weeks you get to know a completely new company and within a few weeks you learn all about that company or market through various analyses. Moreover, your team challenges you to contribute ideas and dive into the deep end. This combination ensures that each project provides new insights.

What does your team look like?

I am part of the Financial Due Diligence team, which specializes in the healthcare and manufacturing industries. During projects, you really get to know your team members, as you sometimes spend several weeks together in a room. Additionally, you also get to know the rest of Financial Due Diligence through various activities throughout the year, such as monthly meetings and social events.

Do you also do activities together outside of work hours?

Absolutely! We have social activities with my FDD team and the FDD department. Additionally, I also do a lot with my trainee group. For example, we have planned a weekend away, often go for drinks together on Friday evenings, and have a trainee lunch on Thursdays.

What do you think about the work-life balance at PwC?

At PwC, work-life balance is important. Yes, there is hard work, but it can easily be combined with your personal life. I like to exercise and see friends during the week, and with clear communication to your colleagues, the balance is easily achievable.

What would you like to say to future colleagues?

PwC is the perfect place to start your career. Whether you start as an expert trainee or a rotation trainee, you will get the right guidance where needed, but also the space to really challenge yourself and go the extra mile.

“The difference with the expert track is that you immediately specialize in the field that you find interesting, while the rotation track gives you the chance to get to know different aspects.”
