In coorporation with the Energy Delta Institute, the Academy offers the Course Finance, Risk and the Energy Value Chain.

The 5-day joint excellence programme with Energy Delta Institute is designed to enhance participant’s expertise in finance through the state-of-the-art (re)positioning framework on the energy value chain. Thus,the programme follows the trajectory from risk assessment, valuation,financial structuring, ergers and acquisitions, due diligence to postmerger integration. The learning objectives are put into practice through application of a variety of energy specific case studies and exercises throughout the course. The teachers are capable of bridging the basic academic insights with the energy business practice.

Aim of this energy finance course

Energy Delta Institute together with PwC Academy set up this five-day energy finance course to help energy professionals enhance their understanding of the energy value chain and the impact of risk:

  • economics – why is the energy value chain what it is, how can external risks be identified, understand thing market dynamics, appropriate forecasting methods;
  • valuation – what are crucial value drivers, how to measure value, what are the value-implications of risks;
  • finance and Treasury – what is the optimal financial structure of the company, how should the companies’ activities be financed given the risk profiles, how can financial positions be managed optimally?
  • transactions – how are decisions to expand, contract or reorient along the value chain developed, how are targets identified, how does the process of developing and closing a deal work;
  • due Diligence and Post Merger – how can the internal risks associated to an asset deal or an investment be identified, how can the success of the deal be safeguarded.

Upon completion of this course, the participants will be able to:

  • interpret the relationship between risk and expected return across the energy value chain;
  • determine the value and motivate the optimum investment in energy projects;
  • formulate strategies that capture opportunities while mitigating specific risks;
  • distinguish the latest developments driving transformations and transactions in and around the wider energy industry;
  • understand the due diligence process and the post deal/integration.

For whom

This programme is targeted at financial (middle management) professionals with about 3-8 years of working experience and a master level in finance, economics, business administration, or comparable: 

  • Financial controllers;
  • Accountants;
  • Strategy advisors;
  • Operational, portfolio and risk managers.

Who are the trainers?

  • Jan Willem Velthuijssen is currently Chief Economist and Energy Strategy Partner at PwC and Professor of Economics at the University of Groningen. He holds a MSc degree in Econometrics and a PhD in Energy Economics.
  • Martijn van Heugten has transaction experience in number of industries, but with focus on energy & utilities sector. Involvement in number of deals with value over €1 bln. Board level presence at large listed and unlisted companies.

The training courses of the Academy meet the requirements for Permanent Education of the NBA. By completing this training, accountants (AA’s en RA’s) receive 34 PE hours. The certificate of attendance will be provided 4 weeks after the training.
