Energy and commodities

Inhouse training

General Information

This inhouse training helps the participants of your company to understand the challenges to the (accounting) organisation that energy and commodities trading pose. Energy and commodities trading is in many aspects very similar to trading in financial instruments such as shares and bonds. However, interesting differences exist, such as product quality differences, the need for physical delivery, storage costs and more volatile and less liquid markets. From an accounting angle, difficulties arise from the ‘discriminating’ nature of IAS 39 towards commodities which has resulted in the ‘own use’ concept, in the difference between hedging a financial and a non-financial item and in a quest for embedded derivatives.

The program of a ½ day inhouse training can look as follows:

  • Introduction
  • Why is energy different?
  • The trading and sourcing process
  • The trading methodologies
  • Energy sourcing and IFRS
  • Derivatives and own use
  • Embedded derivatives
  • Recap and wrap up

By attending this inhouse training, the participants of your company will:

  • Have a solid basis to tackle the issues that your company is dealing with
  • Understand the difference between commodity and financial markets
  • Know the fair value concept
  • Understand how IAS 39 works in a commodity environment and what this means for hedge accounting
  • Know the IFRS 7 disclosure requirements
